“You can have data without information, but you cannot have information without data”- Daniel Keys Moran (American Computer Programmer and Science Fiction Writer)

It is easy to feel lost in an ocean of data — especially when the data is scattered, cluttered, or heterogeneous. When education information systems were not yet developed and reports were prepared manually, every department in a school prepared its own report, in a unique format, with its own set of facts and figures and its own techniques. Some departments were more organized, some just could not make sense of all the information they had at their disposal. Files could be lost or misplaced, very old data was often irretrievable, and, in the absence of all facts on one single platform, it was practically impossible to detect an anomaly or identify trends and patterns.

With Tally and excel, data management became a tad easier. However, consolidated reporting became truly seamless with the advent of robust education management information systems.

Indeed, it takes just a couple of steps now to prepare an MIS report.

The first step would be to upload data into the EMIS. The education management system collects and stores crucial data pertaining to student attendance, hostel details, student profiles, personal data, library information, exam records, etc. Alternatively, the EMIS can extract data from the school ERP and then proceed with its task of collating and organizing the data.

Once the data is uploaded, your next step would be to define the parameters under which the data can be classified. Thus you can classify your data according to alumni details, grades, and reports, exam schedules, fee details, course and batch, student attendance, etc.

Finally, you need to ask the system to generate the education MIS report you require.

Every educational management information system now has the facility to generate business intelligence powered reports that help you get a bird’s eye view of the operations and workflows in different departments of the school. It is also easy with this system to identify trends or anomalies and take corrective measures if the trend is taking your school downhill.

Thus, the importance of education management information systems in driving school progress and enhanced learning outcomes cannot be underestimated.

With its capacity to collate, analyze, and generate reports systematically and speedily, the educational management information system (EMIS) is a powerful ally of school management, school decision-makers, and academic thought leaders. High on accuracy and quick on the uptake, the MIS report generating tool has proved to be the school’s best friend.
